EPISODE FOUR
Amanda and Pierce sat close to the glass window of St Pierre's restaurant. A French restaurant sitting at the heart of the city. One of the most prestigious restaurants ever spoken of in that city.
She was kind of distracted and still thinking about her conversation with Jay earlier. She had developed a soft spot for the stud and her son, and she was in no way willing to let them down or rip off the only home they ever knew. She remembered one night when she was moved to a new foster care home and how she hated it there. The smell was horrible and the food was devastating. But she became family with the other children she met there. Jay had risked her life to save her in the Chinese restaurant, something no one has ever done for her before.
"Amanda! Amanda! Amanda!"
Amanda turned her head slightly towards Pierce.
"The waiter is asking you what you would like to have."
She took the menu booklet from the table and glanced through it. Sincerely she was not really hungry. She just wanted to get the night over and done with.
"I will have a Bouillabaise with a Steak au BΓ©arnaise please."
"I will have what the lady is having."
The waiter wrote down their orders and left.
"Tell me whats on your mind Amanda."
"Nothing you need to worry about. Am here to have a good time, aint you ?"
Saturday nights were always game nights for Jay and her son Jason. But it was a few hours before the game would start. They already bought their tickets to go to the Red Socks game and their was an extra ticket for Jay's brother, Curtis, but he called earlier on to say that he wouldnt be able to make it.
Amanda walked up the drive way of Jay's apartment and she knew that Jay was home because her truck was parked right outside the apartment. She rang the door bell twice and waited for response. A few minutes later the door opened up and there was Jay looking flushed and dashingly charming in her boyish combat shorts and sleeveless t-shirt. Amanda had never seen Jay in a casual outfit before, not that she ever really paid attention to what she wore.
"Can i come in?"
"Sure."
Amanda walked into Jay's apartment and looked around. The house was stunningly well organised and clean for a tomboy. Infact Amanda was kind of impressed.
"I just cooked us some dinner would you like to join?"
"Look, Jay, i only came to talk to you about what happened last...."
"Don't worry about that Miss Bright. You are only doing your job right? But please join us, there's enough to go around."
They sat around the table and said the grace then passed around the plates. Jason was already dressed in his Red Socks jersey and ready for the game.
"Hello pumpkin" Amanda said patting his head.
"Ready for the game huh?"
"Ain't you my mummy's boss?" Jason asked looking puzzled.
Amanda laughed out loud and turned to Jay.
"You have a really smart kid here."
"A blessing indeed."
They ate for a few minutes in silence, then Amanda turned and said to Jay, "So how long have you worked with your company Jasmine?"
Jay was kind of surprised that Amanda referred to her as Jasmine. Only her parents called her that.
"Ive been with them for two years now. Ever since i lost my medical license."
Amanda almost choked on her food.
"You're a doctor?"
"As a matter of fact i was. I lost my license due to misinformation. I was set up."
Tell me what happened Jasmine."
"I'd rather not talk about this in front of my son."
After dinner, Amanda helped Jay to clear up the table. It was already six thirty.
"We 've got three tickets to go watch the Red Socks game would you care to join?"
"I'd love to, but am sure the third ticket is for someone else. She didnt show up?"
"How would you know that its a she?"
"Well is it not?"
Jay smiled and looked right at Amanda. Amanda couldnt help but notice the perfectly white dentition and how amazing they looked. She had never seen Jay smile before.
"Wow nice, i made you smile."
"You did. And there's no she. Well there hasnt been in a while now. Its my brother who stood us up."
"Well i guess i can fill in for him then."
Amanda got back to her apartment very happy. She had had the best night of her life in a very long time. The events that took place that night kept on replaying in her head. She hadnt been with people so real in a long time. Infact she felt like a part of the family.
She wasnt sure what all these things meant but surely knew that things were about to change. She took her paint brushes and went to the canvas that was close to the glass window, to complete the unfinished painting.
Her cell phone rang and it was a call from Pierce Anderson.
He called up to check up on her and how she was doing. Then asked her if she would be free on Wednesday night to go on another date. She said she would check and get back to him.
Jay was not sure if to be mad at Amanda or the lawfirm she worked for or maybe the people who wanted them to give up their houses.
She tucked Jason into bed and went downstairs to the kitchen to grab a beer from the fridge. She popped it open with her teeth and headed towards the kitchen table to surf through the remaining mail that was on her table. She took a sip from the bottle and shuffled the letters.
One of the envelopes was from the last hospital where she worked.
She opened it up and there was nothing so important in its content.
The thing that gave her the most joy about practicing medicine was the fact that she could save people's lives and give them a second chance. Something her brother never had.
She knew that if she could gather enough evidence that she had been set up, she would be able to get her license back.
Someone forged her signature and signed off on an illegal operation claiming it was her that signed off on it. And that operation cost the life of that patient. She wanted to know who did it and why they did it. But alot was at stake because the life of her son would be in danger.
She snapped out of her thoughts and tried to focus on the present. She needed to start thinking of an alternative as to how she was going to start over somewhere else if she lost her apartment. Of course she was going to stay and fight for what she believed in but she wasnt going to fight stupid. She needed to have something to fall back to if she lost her home for, at least for the sake of her son.
Amanda woke up at 7am sharp and she needed to be ready and at work by 8am. She rushed into the bathroom and had her bath then she came out and goy dressed. By the time she got outside, her ride was already waiting for her in front of her apartment. The driver came out to open the door but it wasnt Jay. Amanda felt kind of disappointed. She knew that Jay was not happy about the pending case but she didnt know that Jay would quit her job cos of that. And she felt that the other night they spent together would change things but not in this way.
"What happened to the last driver that used to work for me?"
"She requested for a leave ma'am but would be back after two weeks."
Amanda didnt know what that meant. Whether she would be back to work or back to work for her again. Just when they were beginning to create a bond.
Jay knew that it was the right thing to do. To take some time off and figure out what she would do next. Twl weeks was enough time to put things in place. She ignited her truck and drove off to the district attorney's office. And as usual the attorney's secretary greeted her a little too enthusiastically. The woman had made several advances towards her but she was not so responsive about it. The one time she decided to go out on a date with her turned out to be not so good.
Jay greeted her and asked to see Pierce Anderson. When she got into his office he was hell bent over some files trying to get some work done.
"Have a seat Miss sanders. I know why you're here."
"Well that makes it very easy for me then."
"The thing is you have two choices and both of them involve you fighting for something. You can fight to keep your house which at the end you might end up losing or you can fight for a better future for you and your son without your house in it. The choice is yours. I know that its a very difficult choice to make but there's little i can do for you."
