EPISODE FOUR
Amanda and Pierce sat close to the glass window of St Pierre's restaurant. A French restaurant sitting at the heart of the city. One of the most prestigious restaurants ever spoken of in that city.
She was kind of distracted and still thinking about her conversation with Jay earlier. She had developed a soft spot for the stud and her son, and she was in no way willing to let them down or rip off the only home they ever knew. She remembered one night when she was moved to a new foster care home and how she hated it there. The smell was horrible and the food was devastating. But she became family with the other children she met there. Jay had risked her life to save her in the Chinese restaurant, something no one has ever done for her before.
"Amanda! Amanda! Amanda!"
Amanda turned her head slightly towards Pierce.
"The waiter is asking you what you would like to have."
She took the menu booklet from the table and glanced through it. Sincerely she was not really hungry. She just wanted to get the night over and done with.
"I will have a Bouillabaise with a Steak au BΓ©arnaise please."
"I will have what the lady is having."
The waiter wrote down their orders and left.
"Tell me whats on your mind Amanda."
"Nothing you need to worry about. Am here to have a good time, aint you ?"
Saturday nights were always game nights for Jay and her son Jason. But it was a few hours before the game would start. They already bought their tickets to go to the Red Socks game and their was an extra ticket for Jay's brother, Curtis, but he called earlier on to say that he wouldnt be able to make it.
Amanda walked up the drive way of Jay's apartment and she knew that Jay was home because her truck was parked right outside the apartment. She rang the door bell twice and waited for response. A few minutes later the door opened up and there was Jay looking flushed and dashingly charming in her boyish combat shorts and sleeveless t-shirt. Amanda had never seen Jay in a casual outfit before, not that she ever really paid attention to what she wore.
"Can i come in?"
"Sure."
Amanda walked into Jay's apartment and looked around. The house was stunningly well organised and clean for a tomboy. Infact Amanda was kind of impressed.
"I just cooked us some dinner would you like to join?"
"Look, Jay, i only came to talk to you about what happened last...."
"Don't worry about that Miss Bright. You are only doing your job right? But please join us, there's enough to go around."
They sat around the table and said the grace then passed around the plates. Jason was already dressed in his Red Socks jersey and ready for the game.
"Hello pumpkin" Amanda said patting his head.
"Ready for the game huh?"
"Ain't you my mummy's boss?" Jason asked looking puzzled.
Amanda laughed out loud and turned to Jay.
"You have a really smart kid here."
"A blessing indeed."
They ate for a few minutes in silence, then Amanda turned and said to Jay, "So how long have you worked with your company Jasmine?"
Jay was kind of surprised that Amanda referred to her as Jasmine. Only her parents called her that.
"Ive been with them for two years now. Ever since i lost my medical license."
Amanda almost choked on her food.
"You're a doctor?"
"As a matter of fact i was. I lost my license due to misinformation. I was set up."
Tell me what happened Jasmine."
"I'd rather not talk about this in front of my son."
After dinner, Amanda helped Jay to clear up the table. It was already six thirty.
"We 've got three tickets to go watch the Red Socks game would you care to join?"
"I'd love to, but am sure the third ticket is for someone else. She didnt show up?"
"How would you know that its a she?"
"Well is it not?"
Jay smiled and looked right at Amanda. Amanda couldnt help but notice the perfectly white dentition and how amazing they looked. She had never seen Jay smile before.
"Wow nice, i made you smile."
"You did. And there's no she. Well there hasnt been in a while now. Its my brother who stood us up."
"Well i guess i can fill in for him then."
Amanda got back to her apartment very happy. She had had the best night of her life in a very long time. The events that took place that night kept on replaying in her head. She hadnt been with people so real in a long time. Infact she felt like a part of the family.
She wasnt sure what all these things meant but surely knew that things were about to change. She took her paint brushes and went to the canvas that was close to the glass window, to complete the unfinished painting.
Her cell phone rang and it was a call from Pierce Anderson.
He called up to check up on her and how she was doing. Then asked her if she would be free on Wednesday night to go on another date. She said she would check and get back to him.
Jay was not sure if to be mad at Amanda or the lawfirm she worked for or maybe the people who wanted them to give up their houses.
She tucked Jason into bed and went downstairs to the kitchen to grab a beer from the fridge. She popped it open with her teeth and headed towards the kitchen table to surf through the remaining mail that was on her table. She took a sip from the bottle and shuffled the letters.
One of the envelopes was from the last hospital where she worked.
She opened it up and there was nothing so important in its content.
The thing that gave her the most joy about practicing medicine was the fact that she could save people's lives and give them a second chance. Something her brother never had.
She knew that if she could gather enough evidence that she had been set up, she would be able to get her license back.
Someone forged her signature and signed off on an illegal operation claiming it was her that signed off on it. And that operation cost the life of that patient. She wanted to know who did it and why they did it. But alot was at stake because the life of her son would be in danger.
She snapped out of her thoughts and tried to focus on the present. She needed to start thinking of an alternative as to how she was going to start over somewhere else if she lost her apartment. Of course she was going to stay and fight for what she believed in but she wasnt going to fight stupid. She needed to have something to fall back to if she lost her home for, at least for the sake of her son.
Amanda woke up at 7am sharp and she needed to be ready and at work by 8am. She rushed into the bathroom and had her bath then she came out and goy dressed. By the time she got outside, her ride was already waiting for her in front of her apartment. The driver came out to open the door but it wasnt Jay. Amanda felt kind of disappointed. She knew that Jay was not happy about the pending case but she didnt know that Jay would quit her job cos of that. And she felt that the other night they spent together would change things but not in this way.
"What happened to the last driver that used to work for me?"
"She requested for a leave ma'am but would be back after two weeks."
Amanda didnt know what that meant. Whether she would be back to work or back to work for her again. Just when they were beginning to create a bond.
Jay knew that it was the right thing to do. To take some time off and figure out what she would do next. Twl weeks was enough time to put things in place. She ignited her truck and drove off to the district attorney's office. And as usual the attorney's secretary greeted her a little too enthusiastically. The woman had made several advances towards her but she was not so responsive about it. The one time she decided to go out on a date with her turned out to be not so good.
Jay greeted her and asked to see Pierce Anderson. When she got into his office he was hell bent over some files trying to get some work done.
"Have a seat Miss sanders. I know why you're here."
"Well that makes it very easy for me then."
"The thing is you have two choices and both of them involve you fighting for something. You can fight to keep your house which at the end you might end up losing or you can fight for a better future for you and your son without your house in it. The choice is yours. I know that its a very difficult choice to make but there's little i can do for you."

EPISODE THREE
Amanda asked Jay to park right in front of the district attorney's office there in Queens Estate. Jay kept wondering why such a high profile lawfirm was in such a place like this. Maybe she was there on personal issues. But why would she be attending to personal issues during work hours.
Amanda walked out of the car and told Jay to wait as she went into the small office space that served as the attorney's lair.
Jay was now alone with Jason and she knew that it was a perfect time to talk to him about what had happened in his school that same day.
"Sweety can you tell me why you hit your classmate, Tommy?"
There was no reply from Jason he just put his head down and was playing with the zipper of his winter jacket.
"Jason you need to talk to mummy. I want to make sure this never happens again okay?"
"Where's my dad, mum?"
This question again. This was the hardest thing she had ever had to explain to her son.
"Hun, I've told you before that it's just me and you against the world okay? And when you're old enough i'd explain everything to you. But you still havent told me why you got into a fight today at school."
"Tommy called you a lesbian. He said that i have two mummies and no daddy. That was why i hit him."
Jay new how difficult it was for Jason but she told him this,
"Its true son. Mummy only dates women. But that doesnt make you less of a human or less special than the rest of them. It means you are unique."
She leaned and kissed him on his forward.
Amanda went into the office and looked around. Just by the corner close to a door was a desk with a middle age woman sitting behind it. Amanda walked towards her direction and asked to meet with Pierce Anderson, the district attorney.
"Do you have an appointment?"
"Infact i do. Please let him know that Amanda Bright is here to see him."
Standing on the other side of his office desk, Pierce Anderson looked outrageously handsome in his oversized shirt and his loosed tie. He looked fashionably unkempt for an attorney. Just at the corner his jacket was hanging on the jacket stand.
"Please take a sit Miss Bright."
"Please call me Amanda."
"So i got your memo. I would really say that what you are demanding for is remarkably outrageous. You do understand the implications of this right?"
"Yes I do and that is why i am here. I am here not on my own accord but to represent the interest of the SMAT Tech Incorporation Company. The compensation we are offering to the residents is enough for them to restart their lives somewhere else."
"But what if they decide to fight this in the court of law."
"Then they would have to deal with the consequences. The compensation deal will be revoked and when they lose. They will eventually have nothing left. That is why i chose to speak with you directly so you can help them to make a better choice."
"I hear you Amanda. But you are one tough attorney."
She smiled and stood up, then dropped a file at the top of his table.
"This is all the information you need to learn about the compensation plan and the conditions that must be met. Thats my business card. You can call me when you have come to a conclusion.
"Well can i call you for dinner ? Say Friday night."
"Well i'd have to think about it."
She smiled and walked away.
Jay could see Amanda walking towards the car, she stepped out and opened the door for her. Then when she got in Jay turned to her and said.
"Can i drop off my son at the house ? Its just around the corner."
"Okay you have ten minutes."
"Ten minutes it is."
Jay drove to her house which was only a few minutes drive from the attorney's office. She dropped off Jason and told him to go meet his baby sitter. Then she ignited the car and asked Amanda where they would be headed next.
"Am taking the remaining day off."
She took her phone and dialed Thelma, her assistant.
"Has the reservation been made? Yes. Just clear my remaining schedule."
"Take me to L'eau De La Belle. I need a mini vacation."
By the time that Amanda was done at the spa, it was already a few minutes past seven. It was her maid's day off and she felt felt it was too late to cook so she went to grab some Chinese food. It wasnt really her style because she preferred to eat healthy food to maintain her body and stay healthy but tonight she was feeling like to go out of her usual routine.
Jay watched from the glass window as Amanda ordered for her Chinese take outs. Then from the distance she noticed an odd looking person from the corner of her eye surveying the area and moving suspiciously. When the person came closer it was a man wearing a black drench coat and a black head warmer. Then he walked into the Chinese restauraunt and brought out a gun.
Everyone laid on the floor including the gorgeous Amanda Bright.
Jay knew that restaurant very well. She would bring Jason their sometimes to have some stakes.
She also knew that there was a back entrance to the restaurant from the kitchen.
She then opened the door slowly and bent over in order not to be seen. She then went into the restaurant through the back door, unnoticed.
She had undergone some training during her scout days and took some classes to learn how to defend herself. But this wasnt just some training, this was real life.
She went in and surprised the robber from the back. Took a piece of wood sitting at the corner and hit him behind his head. She disarmed him and asked everyone to calm down that everything would be alright. She then brought out her phone and dialled 911. Then reported the case of an attempted robbery.
Amanda saw everything that happened and she was flabbergasted.
Jay noticed the astonished look on her face and then walked towards her to help her up.
Amanda managed to say a thank you.
Jay and Amanda waited around for the police to come and then gave their statements. Then Jay drove Amanda home to her apartment.
"Thank you for having my back Jay."
"You deserve it Miss Bright."
"No i dont. I almost called your work place to get you fired today because you went to be there for your son."
"But you didnt right ? "
Amanda hugged Jay tighly. Kay smiled and tried not to make a big deal out of a friendly hug.
Amanda walked into the building that her apartment was in and Jay went into the parking lot, got in her truck and drove home.
She walked to her mail box that was in front of her house and took out all the mails. She shuffled through them as she walked back to her apartment then one caught her eye.
It was from Harvey Law Firm.
She tore the envelope open and skimmed through its content. It looked interesting.
She got to her house, sat on the couch in her living room and then gave it her attention.
By the time she was done reading its content she was enraged.
It was a Friday and way past working hours so she could not go to the district attorney's office to make inquiries.
She then placed a call to his personal cell and it went straight to voice mail.
Amanda got dressed in a quiet suggestive outfit. It was her style to emanate every ounce of sexual appeal after work hours talk less of when she is going on a date.
She knew that Pierce Anderson would be there to meet her any minute. Her door bell rang and when she opened it she was surprised that it wasnt Pierce that was standing in front of her house.
It was an angry looking Jasmine Sanders.
"Jay what are you doing here?"
Jay brought out the envelope in her hand and handed it to her.
"You knew about this?"
"Yes. But its just business."
"Its business to you but this is personal for me. It is for my son, for me and for the many families who would be rendered homeless. How are you going to live with it huh?"
"Can we talk about this some other time. I'm kind of in the middle of something now. I'll call you tomorrow and we can meet and talk."
Jay walked back to her truck and drove off.
A few minutes later Pierce parked his car in front of Amanda's house and went to ring the doorbell.
Amanda appeared after a few minutes and opened the door.
"Oh its you."
"Yes its me. Where you expecting someone else ? "
"Not really. Let me grab my things and we can be on our way."

EPISODE TWO
"Grab your back pack Jason! It's on your bed." Jay shouted across from the kitchen to her son.
"Hurry up so you dont miss the bus."
Eight years ago when she made the decision to go to the sperm bank and request a donor, she was terrified. She thought about everything she could possibly think of and how it would affect her child. The stress of being a single lesbian parent in a world that was not same sex relationship friendly and how it might confuse her child. She also knew that she would love him unconditionally the moment she held him in the hospital. She named him Jason after her late brother. Her brother died of Ischemic heart disease. A heart condition that was caused by narrowing of the coronary artery and cutting off supply of blood to the heart. Thats one of the reasons why she went into medicine to save many lives since she could not save that of her brother.
"Hey mum am ready to go" Jason said subtly from behind her. She was startled because she didnt hear him coming, being lost in thoughts.
She put his lunch box in his back pack and walked him to the bus stop which was right in front of her house. They were just in time. She kissed him on his forehead and told him to be a good boy then she set him off to join the other students in the school bus.
She hurriedly went back to her apartment and got her suit jacket and tie. She stood in front of the mirror while she knotted her tie then she went to the garage and mounted her truck.
Within a few minutes she was enroute Amanda's house. It took her about twenty minutes to get there due to traffic. On getting there, she parked in front of the building and then went to the reception to inform Amanda that she had arrived in order to get the keys and get the car ready.
The receptionist made a call through to Amanda's penthouse house.
"Good morning ma'am, your driver just arrived and is asking for the key. Yes. Yes. Okay."
The receptionist droppe the call and told Jay to go upstairs.
Jay was a bit unnerved. Normally she is supposed to pick up the keys from the reception and head to the parking lot to get the car ready.
Jay walked to the elevator and punched the code that Amanda had given her before. She got to Amanda's apartment and rang the door bell. Within a short time Amanda opened the door to let her in."I would like to apologise for a slight change in your routine. I used the car last night and forgot to drop off the key at the reception. The key is on the kitchen counter."
Jay noticed the painting close to the glass window at the other side of the spacious living room. Amanda had taste in interior decoration, she noticed. Luxurious and fancy antiques sitting around with the latest technology of gadgets. But out of all the things in the sitting room it was the unfinished painting that caught Jay's eyes.
She walked to the kitchen and grabbed the car keys.
"Your car would be ready before you are done getting ready ma'am."
"Thank you Jay."
Jay went down stairs to get the car ready.
Amanda had a long night last night trying to have her way around this SMAT case. She had handled so many top notch cases without flinching but this one felt different. Families would lose their homes and be pushed into the street. Everything they worked to build would be gone within the twinkle of an eye.
These were happy families. Father's that took their sons to watch the game on Saturdays and mothers that took their daughters for piano lessons on Wednesdays.
She new she had to do something to soothe herself so she did something she had not done in a long time. She painted. She found her old supply of oil paints and brushes then drove out to the nearest store to get some canvases.
She took her items and went out of her apartment into the elevator. On getting outside, her driver stepped out and opened the door for her.
"Thank you."
Jay had just dropped off Amanda at the famous Harvey Law Firm building when she received a call. It was from Lofty Heights Elementary School, the school she enrolled Jason in.
"Good morning, I'm I speaking with Miss Jasmine Sanders?"
"Miss Sanders on the phone, how may I help you ma'am?"
"We called to inform you that your attention is needed in the school premises immediately with regards to your son."
"Is he all right?"
"Yes he is fine, but Tommy the boy he fought with isn't. Make yourself available as soon as possible."
Jay knew that she had to leave immediately. She went into the Harvey Law Firm building and requested to speak with Miss Amanda Bright.
"Do you have an apointment Miss."
"No. I'm her driver and its an emergency."
"You would have to leave a message, she is currently in a meeting."
Jay left a message for Amanda and then took a cab to Lofty Height Elementary School.
She was asked into the principal's office.
"Your son has been an exceptionally bright student in his academics and very attentive in the classroom. That is the reason why it came as a shock to us that he got into a fight with his classmate. He had refused to tell us why he he Tommy."
"What happened to you darling?" Jay asked Jason in a sad tone.
The principle went further to tell them that they might have to suspend him if this kind of incidence should take place again. Then she was told to take Jason home to take the day off.
She knew she couldnt take him to the house because the baby sitter wouldnt be around until after school hours. So Jay took him to her work place.
Amanda got out of the meeting to her office. She told her assistant to get across to the driver and tell her to get the car ready.
Thelma, Amanda's assistant called the reception and was told that the driver had left a message.
Amanda was furious. How dare she leave her post and go out just like that. Before she had the time to get a call across to the company that she hired Jay from she was informed by her assistant that the driver was around and would get the car ready within ten minutes.
Jay new that she was going to get and earful from her boss. She waited patiently in the car. As Amanda approached she stepped out of the Rolls Royce to open the door for her as usual.
"I dont pay you to wander about during your work hours."
"I am sorry ma'am it was an emergency from...."
"Mummy!" Jason shouted from the front seat.
"And you brought your kid to work?"
"I can explain ma'am."
Amanda got into the car and sat patiently as she waited for Jay to get into the car and give her some explanation."
Jay started the car and asked her where they would be going next.
"Queen Estate, downtown Mediva."
Jay paused for a while.
"Get going please would you, is there any problem."
"No problem ma'am, thats where I live with my son."
Amanda felt a little weak from the information she just learned. But she could not say anything.
"So whats that explanation you wanted to give?"
Jay told Amanda everything that happened as she drove her to Queens Estate.

EPISODE ONE
She stared right through the window of her penthouse into the soul of the city. The way the lights were shinning and Christmas songs were resonating captivated her soul.
She didnt really believe in Christmas or understand the idea of an old man giving children gifts and people singing songs and having dinner.
Maybe it was because she never had all that while growing up. It was more of moving from one foster care home to another.
"Excuse me Miss Bright, your dinner is ready" Amanda's maid interrupted.
"Thank you. You may leave now."
Amanda couldnt bring herself to believe that she is now a partner in the Harvey's Law Firm. One of the top and most sought for legal practitioners in the country. Discovering seven years ago that her real birth father was a multi millionaire and that he left a fortune for her was the beginning of an upward movement in the graph of her achievements. She graduated from Harvard Law School with honours, one of the brightest students in her class.
She turned and sighed, then walked slowly to her dining table. Kristen, Amanda's maid had made quite a generous dinner for her. With spiced chicken, baked potatoes, and gravy for main course. Then apple pie, mango sauce and fruit salad for dessert.
There was soft classical music playing in the stereo to soothe her mind and an amazing meal in front of her. That was all she needed at that moment.
After dinner she went to her bed room and stripped off her clothes, then she went into the bathroom and filled the tub with warm water and lather soap. She lit some scented candles and played her favourite John Legend songs. Life is good.
The next morning was a bit of a hassle situation. She woke up and had to get dressed for work. She loved her job and the money that comes with it. But she knew that something was missing.
Her driver was already waiting in the drive way to pick her up and take her to work.
"Good morning, Miss Bright, looking great this morning."
Amanda was puzzled. The last time she remembered her driver was a white man. And now the person standing in front of her is a black stud female. Maybe the company had assigned another driver to her
"Good morning..."
"Jay. Just call me Jay ma'am."
"You're a woman."
"Yes i am."
Jay opened the door for Amanda and let her in, then went to the driver's sit and ignited the car. A grey five hundred thousand dollar Rolls Royce.
On getting to her office, Amanda was told by her assistant that there was an urgent meeting being held at the conference room and all the active partners were there.
Amanda then told her assistant to clear up her remaining schedule for the day.
She walked into the conference room with confidence and sat on the chair at the right hand side of her boss.
Her boss, Mrs Rachael Langley, is a 45 year old woman abundantly rich, successful and married to someone much more younger than her.
Amanda admired the woman's wit. Strict, principled, relentless and resilient.
"Am sure you all are wondering why this meeting was called impromptu. There has been a change of plans. The SMAT Tech Incorporation wants to acquire the whole neighbourhood of Queens Estate, downtown Mediva. This would usually have been an easy thing for our firm to pull off. But the whole neighbourhood has posed to be uncondescending and we need to seduce them to succumb to our demands. This is a multi million dollar case and we need to put our best attorney on it."
The board room was quite for some seconds until Amanda spoke up.
"So all the people that would b affected, their homes taken. How do we convince them to give up everything they have and own?"
"Thats why am putting you on the case Amanda Bright. I believe you can get us the SMAT account."
Amanda knew that this was going to be a tough case but she had no choice, she had already been assigned to it.
Back at her office, she drew up some files concerning the Queens Estate neighbourhood. It is a small and peaceful neighbourhood situated in downtown Mediva where families had built their homes. It reminded her of her childhood. She had always craved to be home with her real family instead of moving from a foster care home to another. She couldnt even imagine having all that and then having it taken away from her.
She checked her time and it was five minutes past five o'clock. She packed up her bag and her Apple Mac laptop and some files to work with at home. Then she headed towards the elevator and hit the 0 button indicating the ground floor.
Her driver was already waiting for her at the parking lot. She took her files and opened the door for her, then went to the other side of the car and dropped her files there.
"Lets stop by at Waltmart please. I would like to get some groceries before i head home."
"Okay ma'am."
Amanda rarely cooks her dinner or buys her groceries by herself. She has a maid to do that. But tonight felt different. She wanted to do something special.
Walmart is just around the corner so Jay drove towards there and got to the supermarket within fifteen minutes.
She waited in the car for her boss, Miss Amanda Bright, to go in and do the shopping.
Her phone suddenly rang and when she picked it up it was her son calling to tell her to get him some comic books on her way back from work. Jay didnt have much. She works two jobs to make sure that she and her son get everything they need to be comfortable. It was not easy being both a father and a mother to her son.
It was easier when she still had her license to practice medicine. But it was taken away from her two years ago and now she shuffles inbetween being a high class driver and working at a bar to earn money. She noticed from the corner of her eye that Amanda was approaching so she stepped out of the Rolls Royce and helped her to carry the carton colour grocery bags.
"Thank you."
"You are welcome ma'am."
Jay drove Amanda home and dropped her off.
"Please bring the groceries to the penthouse after you have parked the car. Apartment code is 14427, type the code and you would have access to the elevator.
Jay drove to the parking lot and then took out the groceries and started walking towards the entrance. She typed the code and let herself in with the groceries.
On getting into the house she heard two voices arguing.
"How did you get into my apartment.
"I see you have not changed your code."
"Its over Jamie, we cant be together anymore."
"I know very soon you will come back to me begging,m and it would be too late. I own you Amanda."
Jay noticed that the guy had a Spanish accent.
Jamie walked out right past Jay with his nose up in the air.
Amanda came right after him.
"Am sorry hope you didnt over hear us."
"It was hard not to, you two were kind of loud."
They both laughed.
"The kitchen is straight down the hallway, by the right."
"Thank you Miss Bright."
"Jay, would you like to stay for dinner?"
"I would love to but i have some plans with my son tonight. Maybe some other time."
"Thanks for all your help."
On getting home, Jay was welcomed by her five year old son. The best thing that has ever happened to her.
"Guess who's going to read The Next Wonder tonight?"
"Me mummy!"
She took out three comic books, the third, fourth and fifth edition of the The Next Wonder.
Queens Estate is a quiet neighbourd and safer than most mixed neighbourhoods. She wanted her son growing up in an environment where he felt safe. Somewhere he could learn alot about himself and the black culture. Yet be accustomed to the etiquette that is demanded in a corporate world.
